Ham On the Run!

Let's be honest, the world of iOS games is absolutely flooded with a mass of running titles. Whether it's Temple Run, Tiny Wings, or just another "theme specific" version like Go Ninja!, running titles are starting to reign supreme in the world of mobile gaming. This is probably due to their quick and casual air, which gives gamers an immersive and entertaining experience without the need for a complicated storyline or a complex and in-depth control scheme. The downside is that a lot of imitators are looking to make a quick buck by releasing some lackluster projects, or are sometimes just taking an already established concept and putting a brand new "skin" on it to resell it as their own. There is a silver lining here though, as some companies are actually dedicated to bringing a more entertaining "runner" experience. Take for example, Ham on the Run!, a new and innovative addition to the genre from powerhouse mobile developer Glu Entertainment.

GRAPHICS
The graphics here were obviously meant to be comical and cartoony, and I really respect the overall visual effort that the art team put forward for this title. All of the art is set on a two dimensional plane with a "moving backdrop" that appears to have all been hand-drawn. The colors all mesh incredibly well and pop which makes it very easy to see your character and the hazards in front of him. The animations are very impressive too, capturing the comical, over-the-top action that the title aims for with a variety of colorful, intricate and outrageous explosions. This is definitely one of the better running games out there in terms of overall visual appearance.

SOUND
The sound is actually pretty entertaining, which is odd considering most running titles have a very monotonous set of scores and effects. This time though, you'll be met with comical sounding, upbeat and countrified renditions that will make you feel like you're at home on the farm. Fiddles, banjos and a variety of other bluegrass-inspired instruments fill the musical score, which changes tempo and style at different intervals and during different power-up modes.
The sound effects are supremely entertaining with loud squawking chickens and the echoing sound of a squealing pig as he jumps, bounces, and flies his way over a variety of dangerous obstacles. The sound effects are rich, realistic, and have a great overall feeling to them. The good news is that the music and sounds are actually going to enhance your experience, rather than hinder them like the traditional "repeated" sounds and effects we see with most runners.

GAMEPLAY
At its core, this is just another running title, and to be honest, if you're looking for something that is less "on the rails" and more about customization and in-depth gameplay, then you're probably going to be fairly disappointed with this release. But even in its simplistic control and casual play style, there are still some unique and innovative things that Glu has managed to sneak in.
Take for example the four special power-up modes that you can access while on a run. Grabbing a present will give you one of four (randomized) pig modes; Pogo Pig, Tractor Pig, Carpet Pig, and Hover Pig. Each of these modes comes with its own simplistic yet different control style which gives an interesting and welcome boost to the gameplay, breaking the monotony of a long run at certain points.

You'll also get a variety of other special power-ups that can only be accessed by the luck of the draw, so to speak. Collecting tickets and vegetables on a run will allow you to spin the wheel in between each run attempt. This wheel has a variety of things ranging from bonus vegetables and extra lives, to rocket packs and cannons, all of which will help you gain better distance and collect more experience and veggies.

OVERALL
If you're addicted to the runner craze that is currently sweeping the iOS market then you should definitely take a look at Ham on the Run! This might actually be the best runner I have played to date (by a small margin) and it easily falls into my top five. Hopefully, Glu will recognize what a hit game they have created here and support it with a mass of good updates. Even if the updates and new titles cost cash, it would be well worth it to invest in such a fun title and I don't think many would mind shelling out anything in the ballpark of 0.99 USD.

Pros:
• Casual gameplay with innovative twists
• Crisp, colorful imagery
• Easily one of the best runners to date
• Fun and interesting power-ups

Cons:
• Needs more level variety

Monster Maestro Review: Simple and Addictive Card Action Game For iPhone

Monster Maestro has recently received a slew of positive comments and rave reviews. In fact, it's already made it to the number two slot on the Apple App Store Top 25, and is only a half star short of a flawless rating according iTunes. This free iphone game is polarizing, addictive, and simplistic, which is probably what makes it such a smash hit for casual gamers. However, upon further inspection, Rage of Bahamut fans may notice some key similarities between Monster Maestro and the popular virtual trading card game. Actually, you'll probably notice that Monster Maestro IS Rage of Bahamut, but with a different looking skin.

GRAPHICS
It's hard not to compare this game to Rage of Bahamut and titles like it, since it's so similar in design, but I guess I do give some credit to the artists for crafting an entirely new look and feel. Unfortunately though, this art style is rather cartoony with an emphasis on childlike graphics similar to games like Pokemon and Digimon. I suppose that isn't necessarily unfortunate to those of you who are interested in a more whimsical and kiddish art style, but it's definitely not going to appeal to individuals who enjoy their monster fighting games to have a semi-realistic flair like Yugioh or Magic: The Gathering. This adult and teen oriented look and feeling is said to be the main reason so many players flock to Rage of Bahamut. But still, there is a small sense of adoration here. Even though the developers blatantly took the Rage of Bahamut layout and gameplay style, the artists still managed to create an entirely unique looking collection of monsters and enemies.

SOUND
It's actually pretty impossible to compare Monster Maestro's sound with that of Rage of Bahamut not because they are in completely different leagues, but because Rage of Bahamut doesn't actually have any sound associated with it. And in all fairness, I guess you don't really NEED to have any sound when it comes to a virtual TCG, but it would still be nice to have some background noise.
Luckily, Monster Maestro does have a soundtrack, but it's fairly loud and can get slightly annoying after a while. There are small sounds and effects too, and most of them are fairly spot-on with the game's whimsical feeling. However, when it comes down to it, the sound for this title isn't really going to immerse you. And to be honest, it's not going to make or break your experience with the game anyhow.

GAMEPLAY
This is honestly where things get a little too similar for comfort. When it comes down to the actual gameplay template for Monster Maestro, it's identical to that of Rage of Bahamut. In fact, the game even makes use of some of the same names and titles such as the use of "Friendship Points" to purchase new card packs and summons. There is also a card shop section that has almost an identical layout to that of Rage of Bahamut and a "free card daily" link with an icon that looks and feels similar to its closely related counterpart.
When you enter a quest, you're presented with an almost identical layout to that of Rage of Bahamut, and you even battle other users for treasures in the same manner. In fact, I'm pretty sure that a lot of the animations that were used for these battles and quest lines are pretty much the same in both titles. If you've played each title, it becomes immediately apparent that Monster Maestro is pretty much a clone when it comes to the gameplay.
In fact, I'm convinced that the only differences here are in the art styles and the addition of sound (which is absent in Rage of Bahamut). It is here that it becomes very difficult to gauge what kind of score this game should receive, in terms of a review.

OVERALL
The problem is that Monster Maestro is supremely entertaining, and the small tweaks (like the depth of monster evolution) are a very welcome addition to this type of genre; however, the game is such a blatant rip-off of the already established hit Rage of Bahamut, that it is hard to give it a high score. If it was simply the idea that Monster Maestro took and then made it their own, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But the fact that they lazily, in my opinion, ripped off Rage of Bahamut's entire gameplay interface is rather inexcusable. In my opinion, it is for that reason this game should be scored so low.

PROS:
• Fun, casual gameplay
• Addicting TCG collection aspect Cons:
• Can get VERY EXPENSIVE to get the cards you want
• A blatant rip-off of an established title

Apple Will also Announce New iPod's To Share Stage With New iphone 5

The general consensus is Apple won't be announcing their new iPhone and iPad Mini at the same event (next Wednesday). Although many sources are pointing to 2 to 3 new or updated iPod's to be unveiled.
According to 9to5mac.com:

All these new lines will come in multiple colors, one of the lines will come in two size capacities, and the other two lines will come in a single storage capacity.
With the current iPod nanos and iPod shuffles both available in multiple colors (and with the nano currently available in two capacities and the shuffle in one), we think it is likely that new iPod nanos and iPod shuffles are launching next week.

The mystery third iPod (likely a new version of the Nano) that is rumored to be announced is said to have a longer body larger screen, and a home button. If you look at it from another perspective, some think it will be an iPod Mini to accompany the iPad Mini.
